Choosing the Right Baseball Bat
When choosing a new baseball bat, or you are getting your very first one, it is important to have a bat that is right in length, weight and size. You want the bat to feel comfortable in your hands, and as you swing. That is why it is important to know the benefits of different styles of baseball bats.
Length:
Length is an important consideration when selecting a bat. Longer ones tend to be heavier than shorter ones due to the added length, but also allow for more reach when swinging. Taller players will commonly want to use a longer bat, whereas youth and smaller players will not to test out several different smaller sizes to see what is comfortable. Weight:
The weight of the bat is also something to take into consideration, as when you swing you want to feel confident and have the bat feel like an extension of your arm. Heavier bats are good for having a powerful swing, while lighter bats are quicker and can add more controllability. It is always good when selecting a new bat to swing a variety of different weighted bats to see which one you feel most comfortable with.
Types of Bat Certifications
There are three types of bat certifications: USA, USSSA and BBCOR. This is typically the breakdown focusing on the league requirements and age. Always be sure to check with the league officials to know the standards and requirements for correct baseball bats to use.
USA Bats:
USA bats are typically used for newer, younger baseball players and used in most Little Leagues. These bats help new players develop and hone-in on their batting skills and techniques.
USSA Bats:
USSA Bats are certified by the United States Specialty Sports Association, and are typically used in youth baseball leagues. These bats are also known as “Big Barrel Bats,” due to having a wider barrel. Due to these bats being lighter, it makes it easier for younger players to swing the bat more easily.
BBCOR Bats:
BBCOR Bats are certified by the NCAA and the NFHS, and used in high school and college level play. BBCOR stands for “Batted Ball Coefficient or Restitution,” bats, and they are designed to reduce the trampoline effect of the bat when it strikes the ball, meaning that the bat has less of the pop factor.
