Picking Out The Right Pickleball Paddle
As pickleball continues to grow in the sports world, and many people starting to pick up the sport for the first time, it is important to make sure that you select the best pickleball paddle regardless if you are new to the game or a seasoned player. Below is a quick rundown of what you should consider when selecting a pickleball paddle.
Grip
Grip is an important consideration when selecting a pickleball paddle. You want to ensure that the handle grip feels right in your hand and is comfortable without the possibility of slipping. A smaller grip is good for more flexibility of the wrist, which allows for easier spin when hitting the ball. A larger grip allows for a more powerful strike and precision.
Material
Pickleball paddles come in a several different kinds of material, and each one provides for different styles of gameplay. There are two different aspects to consider when selecting a paddle, and that is the core material and the face material. For face material, you want to take into consideration the surface texture, as more texture will allow for better grip to control and add spin when striking the ball.
Weight
Weight with a pickleball paddle is important. Lighter paddles provide more agility, and control when hitting the ball. With a light weight paddle, the player will need to swing harder to get the power. Heavier paddles can provide more power when swinging, but due to being heavier, it will also take more power and thrust when swinging. When selecting a paddle, remember to try out different weights to see which one feels more comfortable for you, and your playing style.
Length
There are three different lengths for pickleball paddles: standard, elongated and wide. The standard is the original size and length, and has the sweet spot in the middle of the paddle. An elongated paddle is longer than the standard, and the sweet spot is raised towards the top of the paddle. It allows for powerful shots and reach, but does have a smaller sweet spot. A wide paddle is wider and is perfect for a beginner. Due to its wide width, it is more forgiving to mistakes, and has a bigger sweet spot.
When choosing a paddle, always make sure that it feels comfortable in your hands, like an extension of your arm. You want to be sure to be confident with your paddle when on the court.
